Relocation can be a stressful time for any family and there are many challenges to face when you move home. You may be moving further away too which can add more challenges. Here are some steps to moving home with ease.
1. Selling your old home
One of the toughest challenges about relocating is selling your old property. The best thing to do is to put your old home on the market first or in plenty of time before you look at new properties. Before you put your house on the market, go around your home and make a list of repairs to be done and things you could do to improve the overall look of the home. Getting these completed will ensure that your house sells much faster and appeals to more buyers. The last thing you want to do to make a quick sale of your old property is reduce the asking price.
2. Change your address with relevant companies
After you have put down a deposit on your new home, you will need to change your address with relevant companies. Remember to change it with the following:
- Your doctor
- Your dentist
- Your bank or building society
- Your optician
- Your car insurance provider
A good tip is to pay a small fee to have your mail redirected to the new address in case there is anything you forget which can be sorted out later.
3. Sort out utilities and any outstanding bills
There will likely be some extras to pay for before you move home. If you are sticking with the same utility companies then all you need to do is inform them of your new address. If you decide to use the move as an opportunity to try out new gas or electricity companies then you might have outstanding bills to pay. Often, these companies will require at least one month’s notice before you leave so ensure that you give them a call in plenty of time.
4. Throw away anything you don’t need
Relocation is difficult for any family but if there is one thing that can help ease the stress it is a big clear out. Throw out furniture you no longer need or that is beyond repair, throw away any clutter that you don’t need and donate any old clothes or unwanted items to charity. This can take away some of the excess making it easier for you or the removal company you choose. You will be able to fill up the removal truck much quicker, making moving day easier.
5. Move!
Decide on whether you want to rent a removal van and move your things yourself or whether you want to pay a company to do it for you. Some firms even offer packing services but if you have been organized then you should be packed and ready to go on moving day. Call the company well in advance to ensure they are available on your chosen day.
Being organized is the key to successfully relocating. If you ensure everything is in order and that you have settled any outstanding payments, then relocating should go quite smoothly.
